Do it. Best move I ever made.

While not exactly NRV and where I live is a little bigger than Blacksburg, I wouldn't change the lifestyle I have now.

I moved to NOVA soon after college and lived there most my 20's into early 30's - and loved it. Lived just across river and the energy of the city (and of me at that age) was great - but after a few years of marriage, wanted an affordable, good sized house with an actual yard to raise kids that didn't require 2+ hours in a car every day. Suburban NOVA was not the answer. I left and would not move back for 4x what I was making there.

I do get the attraction for some - for a lot of VT grads it is where they were born and raised - that's always an attraction. Multitude of entertainment choices, good restaurants, good schools high median incomes - but crowds, traffic and high cost of living cancels that out at least for me.

I can go to any first run movie on opening night, be at a few different concert venues with national acts within an hour (less than dealing with NOVA traffic for 9:30 Club, Birchmere, Wolftrap or Verizon, etc.) and choose between enough nice restaurants that I don't get bored with the same ones - and (humble brag) both offspring have also been on the Dean's list at VT - even with a rural, public school education. Education is 90% what you make it.

I'm glad I had the roughly 10 year NOVA experience and really enjoy going back to visit, just would never live there again.
